Welcome to my professional story, a journey that has taken me from navigating the high seas as a Third Officer in the Merchant Navy to becoming a Customer Service Ambassador for Microsoft. Each role has been a stepping stone, shaping my skills and experiences in unique ways. Customer Service Ambassador (on behalf of Microsoft)

Acting as first-line technical support for customers using the Microsoft 365 Business Suite and Windows systems. This included:

  • Completing a rigorous training program in customer service, which I successfully passed on the first attempt.
  • Quickly learning about and completing various training programs about the functionality of Microsoft products and how to troubleshoot any issues with them. This included working with Outlook, Exchange, Teams, OneDrive/SharePoint, Copilot, administration via the admin centres, and liaising with domain registrars.
  • Advising customers on resolving issues and queries related to Microsoft products via phone, email, and live chat.
  • Assisting users in setting up their Microsoft 365 Business accounts Advising on how to best utilise the product for their business needs.
  • Troubleshooting software and hardware issues to ensure business continuity for customers.
  • Onboarding customers with Microsoft Copilot, helping them understand the potential of the technology and how it could benefit their business.

Teaching Assistant

During my time at the Vrije University I assisted with the teaching of three courses: Web Development, Pervasive Computing, and History of Computer Science. In this role I was responsible for:

  • Teaching students during labs, guiding them though set exercises to improve their knowledge of the subject.
  • Grading students’ work, giving constructive feedback to help improve their future work.
  • Managing students who need extra attention due to academic irregularities, including both offering pastoral support and creating plans to help them get back on track with their studies.

Simulator Operator

CSMART Academy, Carnival Corporation & PLC

As part of the Carnival Corporation training regime, CSMART ran training simulators. These simulators were full mockups of cruise ship bridges and engine room. In this job I began my journey into tech, teaching myself basic web development to add value to simulator maintenance. My roles in this job included:

  • Running simulation sessions both individually and as part of a team to train sailors in emergency procedures.
  • Providing 1st line technical support within the building, on both the simulators and general IT systems.
  • Learning the basics of marine engineering in order to run engine simulations.
  • Designing and testing new technologies to improve the simulators.

Third Officer, Merchant Navy

Carnival Corporation & PLC

As part of the deck department, I was responsible for maintaining a watch and navigating cruise ships. My duties included:

  • Acting as point of first contact during emergencies, ensuring the safety of both crew and passengers, and communicating clearly with other departments.
  • Organizing and conducting safety training of crew.
  • Conducting ship to shore operations, making sure that both sailors and passengers remained safe in all conditions.
  • Gathering and creating weather forecasts for the ship.

Port Agency Operator

As part of a team, I was responsible for ensuring our customers had smooth and efficient port stays while they were in harbor on the river Thames. This job was carried out alongside my studies in Marine Operations Management. My duties included:

  • Ensuring that all services needed by a vessel whilst in port were booked in advance of their arrival.
  • Informing all stakeholders of the progress of vessels in a timely manner.

Transition from minimal knowledge regarding the practical side of ship operation to being tasked with the responsibility of undertaking roles expected of a third officer. This included:

  • Leading boat drills, organizing equipment inspections and taking bridge watches.
  • Taking responsibility and initiative for furthering my own knowledge and practical skills.
